Tips to build a Facebook page from scratch.

  Don’t resort to this

Building a Facebook page from scratch is one of the harder things I do in my role as a Social Media Manager. Facebook Inc have crafted the platform in such a way that you often need to pay for ads to get your content noticed.

The situation.

A new Business creates a shiny new Facebook Page. Adds a profile picture, banner, and company info. Said company begins to post engaging and informative content. This is done consistently for 4 weeks with nil result.

What gives? It’s frustrating when you have done everything listed on the article you found on google called “Top 5 ways to Facebook” and have had zero page likes or shares.

There are a few ways to get your page to grow, which you can do little by little or all at once. These tips will also apply to LinkedIn.

Invite All Your Friends

This should be the first step. I just did this the other day for my business page that I finally decided to build. Maybe 100+ invites, 15 accepted…. Not much but it helps! If your staff have larger Facebook followings you may be able to utilize these. This will increase your reach exponentially.

Email an Invite your Customers and Contacts to Like Your Page

Do you have an email list? Why not send out an email asking your current clients to follow your page?

You can do this with your personal email lists to make sure friends know you’ve launched a new Page or with your customer contact list. Regardless of who the recipient is make sure your email is focused and direct. The aim is to get people to Like your Page – if the request is a small line in a newsletter, it may get missed. It will help to include a link to your Facebook page. Make it as easy as possible!

Comment on other active Pages as your Page

Did you know you can comment as your page, on other pages? An effective way to get better visibility is to comment on popular posts as your Page. You can’t comment on every post or page in this fashion and this method can be time consuming, but it is an easy and free way to grow.

The best way to do this is to try and answer an industry related question as your page. Or ask a question yourself, which will lead to people clicking through to your page, and if the content is relevant to them they might just hit that like button.

Competition or Giveaway.

This is one of the more common methods of growing a Facebook Page and a straightforward way to extend your reach.

Your aim is to get people to like your page and share a post.

This will help increase you audience dramatically. For this to be effective you will need to already have a few followers to interact with, which if you have done the steps above you will have!

For Example

“Looking to boost your business? This month we are offering a free month of Social Media Management to one lucky business. All you need to do is like and share this post to be eligible!”

Add your Page to your Email signature

How many emails do you send a day? Each time you do it’s a chance to build your social accounts and show off all the work you have been doing.

There are some excellent free signature generators out there which will allow you to add a hyper link to create a professional looking signature. You can even add a photo!

Spending money is the last thing most business owners want to do however it is sometimes necessary. Using Facebook Ads can be an effective way to get new Fans, but I personally don’t spend too much money on Facebook Ads.

You can target your Facebook Ads to your perfect customer by using the Demographics and Interests area and use keywords. You can run a highly targeted campaign to ensure you ads are only put in front of your ideal customer. You will also need to consider the ad copy you use, as this will have a huge effect on the outcome. Try and combine the ads with the offer for best result.

To start a Facebook “Like” click right from your Page with the Promote button in the lower left corner and then select “Promote your Page”.

Boost it!

When you click Boost Post, you have the option to choose either pushing the post to “People who like your page and their friends” or “People you choose through targeting.” You’ll also be able to set your budge

Boost for engagement, then invite everybody who likes your post but doesn’t like your page to like your page. Just click on the “Likes” on each post, there will be a dropdown. This will work better once we have more people following the page.

These tips can be repeated every 6 months. Keep at it and you will see results.

While you at it…..
